Something to be Proud of!

Many times when people are feeling down and need a little pick me up, they turn to music. Music can be a source of release, inspiration, or just something to make you feel good. If you sit there and listen to the lyrics of the songs, many times they hold a lot of meaning and value. You are able to relate the songs to your life in some way.

One song that I have always enjoyed and that has always inspired and impacted me when I listen to it is, That’s Something to be Proud of by Montgomery Gentry. The song’s lyrics speak about different instances though his life that something has occurred and as a result of it he has learned and has been able to take something from it to be proud of. It basically goes through the progression of his life, and makes a point to different things he is proud of and thankful for.

The phrase in the song that has really stuck with me and impacted me was, “You don’t need to make a million, just be thankful to be working.”  Throughout our lives, especially when we are young, everyone tells us we have to make a whole bunch of money to be happy and successful. Happiness and success is different for everyone. When they sing that line, it says that you don’t need to be a millionaire or have a huge mansion to be happy. That all the time people complain about their jobs and how much they hate them, you should take a step back and be thankful that you have a job because there are too many people out there that do not have one. Be thankful for what you have been given and for what you have earned throughout your life. Do not take things for granite, because you never know when they might be taken from you. The ultimate goal is to be happy and make and impact on the people around you and the people that you help bring up in this world.

Walk the Talk

According to the article, Concepts of Leadership, leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective and directs the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent. Basically, a leader is the person that is the one guiding you in the direction to a common goal.

Throughout our lives we have encountered many people that have been fit the definition of a leader, also, many people that have attempted to be that leader but was unsuccessful. Whether it has been through sports, school, work, or just life we have encountered these people.  Not everyone is cut out to be a leader, and you figure this out overtime and through experiences. We create our own definition of a leader through our experiences with people in life.

Many of the common traits between effective leaders include, respect, trust, realist, effective communicator, and passion to name a few. To me, the most crucial is someone who is going to lead by example. As said in the article Leading by Example, make sure you “walk the talk.” This is very imperative when being the leader of a group of people. You do not want to tell everyone that they need to work hard and start working more hours to get stuff done, and then you are the one that leaves right at 5:00 pm to go home. You must be willing to go through the grunt, go to battle side by side, with your people. By working side by side with them, this instills a since of commitment and trust from your followers. If you are the person that tells everyone to stay and then you leave, your people will lose trust and respect from them quicker than you could imagine.  Be the leader that leads by example, that your employees are willing to fight for and has the respect and trust of your followers.

As I said before, everyone has had a true leader and has also had someone who failed at being a leader. Respond below with a story of someone you consider a leader. Are you going to be a leader who leads by example?leader

February 17, 1963 a legend was born in Brooklyn, New York, Michael Jeffrey Jordan. A man who today is recognized across the globe as, “MJ.”

More people than not would consider him the greatest player to ever play the game of basketball. But MJ is more than just a six-time NBA champion, six-time NBA Finals MVP, five-time NBA MVP, among a laundry list of other accomplishments. MJ has transformed into an icon for men, women, and children all over the world.

Michael Jordan did not only have a lasting impact on the basketball world, he had an impact on the entire world. When he was cut from his high school team as a sophomore, he decided at that point he was not going to give up; he worked even harder to prove everyone wrong. That gave the youth inspiration to work hard and never give up no matter what someone tells you. As he stared releasing his own shoe line, he impacted the individuals who were buying his shoes; giving them hope that they were going to be like MJ. By fighting through the challenges and adversity he faced throughout his life inspired many people around the world. Even if you did not like basketball, everyone was a Chicago Bulls fan, and more importantly and MJ fan; well besides the people in Cleveland, New York, and Boston.

The two moments that I will always remember from Michael Jordan’s career include the game that is known as the, “Flu Game.” It was Game 5 of the 1997 NBA Finals. MJ woke up sicker than could be with the flu, but there was no way he was not going to play with the series being tied 2-2. During the game, you could clearly see MJ was weak and out of it. He continues to fight through. The Bulls ended up winning game 5 behind Jordan’s 38 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals, and 1 block, all while playing with the flu. To see Jordan fight through the agony is truly inspiring to everyone. The second moment was the championship he won on Father’s Day in 1996. Seeing the emotion that poured out of him after he led the Bulls to another championship was just incredible. You could see the passion and heart he had. Just an incredible and inspiring moment!

Even though MJ is now 50, he will continue to impact the world for generations to come. Respond to this post by leaving your most memorable Michael Jordan moment!

Just Keep on Smilin’

As I go about my day, I see people who look absolutely miserable. Usually these people are walking around with a disgruntled look on their face or looking down. These people put out a vibe that makes people not want to approach them or engage in conversation. The negative attitude has an effect on the people around them. I begin to think to myself, maybe all these people need is just a little smile!

A smile can truly go a long ways. Non-verbal communication contributes to the majority of communication and more importantly the first impression you give off to people. Usually when you first meet someone or someone walks into a room, the first thing people look at is their face. If that someone is smiling, they are usually more welcomed and have a better response from the people in the room. Smiling gives off a sense of happiness and positive attitude. You are going to be much more willing to go up and talk to a person who is smiling and joyful than someone who has an ill-fated look on their face.

If you provide one of these individuals who look unhappy with a simple smile, has the ability to completely change their attitude. It is very simple to walk past someone and just give them a smile. For how simple of a task it is, it has the opportunity to make a large impact on someone. It can turn their bad day into a good day. Usually, if you give them a smile they will smile back at you. Not only will this make them feel good, but it will make you feel good because you had an impact on someone.

I challenge everyone who reads this blog, to make it a point to smile at one person each day. Whether it looks like they are in a bad mood or not and see how many people you get to smile back. Be the reason someone’s’ day became brighter! Respond below with your experience of a smile changing your day.

Making an Impact!

Welcome to my very first blog! I am going to be blogging about making an impact on the people that surround you as well as the people you encounter. I will be including examples of impactful people in the world, personal experiences with making an impact on someone or when someone made an impact on me, as well as tips and advice on how to make an impact on someone.

Each and every day you are having interactions with people you may know and people you may have no idea who they are.  As you interact, you may very well be impacting the people and you might not even know it. You might be impacting them by what you are saying or what you are doing. This impact also has the ability to be negative or positive way.

As I blog, I am going to be challenging myself as well as my readers to make an impact on someone. Next time you meet someone. If you are a waiter or waitress then next time someone comes in and sits down at your table. If you work in a call center then the next time you talk on the phone with someone. The next time you go through the drive through and you see the nice young lady at the window. The next time you are walking down the street. These are all opportunities to make an impact on someone’s life. It is up to you whether or not that impact with be a positive one or a negative one.
